Eden I&R at Urban Shield in October, 2011

Eden I&R’s Executive Director was able to participate again this year in the annual Urban Shield exercise as a guest of Alameda County’s Sheriff Greg Ahern. As an observer and a participant (i.e., playing a hostage on a plane, train and at Children’s Hospital), Barbara observed SWAT teams from around the world competing throughout 31 scenarios, over a 48 hour period.

At the "hot wash" after action evaluation and ceremony at the end of the event, Sheriff Ahern stated that there is evil in the world and SWAT teams seek it out and destroy it. As a pacifist, Barbara finds it hard to hear these types of statements yet states, "We live in a generally unsafe world, and these drills could one day save the life of a member of my family, friends, co-workers and/or community. From the point of view of being the Executive Director of Eden I&R/211, I was able to discuss the ways in which 211 assists the public before, during and after a disaster with many of the people I met. Therefore, Urban Shield is also a fantastic networking venue between first responders and their support systems like 211." (Click on photos for larger view)
